This latest photo from the Teso Region of Eastern Uganda shows how a classroom building project is moving forward nicely despite the problems of COVID-19 both in the UK and equatorial Africa.
The project to provide a High School for children in Aminit is supported by St Peter’s Church and represents the second secondary school that they have been involved in building in Uganda over the last 15 years. Starting just two years’ ago, Ruddington’s Parish Church has worked with the local community at Aminit to complete a three classroom block – with its smart, new, red roof now finished. They have also laid a base for a new four classroom block which, in total, will provide a classroom for each year group.
Andrew Third, the link person between the Teso Development Trust charity (TDT), and St Peter’s says: “There are so many needs in Uganda that it is easy to lose focus, but one of St Peter’s great strengths is that we give our support consistently to a project to see it through. Honor and Clement Dixon led the effort to build the Ngora Parents’ School for many years seeing it grow from around 100 students to well over 1000 with all the associated facilities. St Peter’s is now on a similar journey with Aminit High School. The school is needed because the nearest secondary school is over 8 miles away across the bush lands, which is dangerous and impractical for children to walk each day, the result being that nobody in the area gets more than primary education.”
Andrew last visited Aminit a year ago with others from TDT, just before the pandemic, and took the photographs below. The first one shows the makeshift classroom in the local church and the second is of the current toilet block for the 300 students – which it’s hoped can also be replaced in the near future.
Andrew continues: “When we first visited Aminit it was less than a 100 students in borrowed, broken down classrooms and under trees outside, and was really just a dream in people’s heads. Now they can see their dreams become reality and they have their own classrooms and student numbers are around 300. St Peter’s will continue to work with them for as long as it takes. Thus far we have donated nearly £8,000 to Aminit and we welcome supporting donations at https://www.justgiving.com/tesodevelopment, nominating the Aminit High School project in the comments.”

The ongoing school project is in addition to the £50,000 grant from the Small Charities Challenge Fund on which RUDDINGTON.info reported last November. This other project is enabling TDT to work with another Ugandan partner to provide four boreholes to access clean water – as well as training and materials for local workers to build 35 latrines for vulnerable households in Kalakai sub-county, also in the Teso region of the country.
